Golden Retriever Travel Tips

A golden retriever craves for attention and needs to be treated just like how you treat other members of your family. It loves to join you during family activities and when traveling, such as when riding in cars. As soon as you get your golden retriever puppy, you should make it appreciate car rides and traveling so that it will eventually enjoy accompanying you.

The first time you take it on a car ride or travel for quite a distance, you should provide it with small amounts of food throughout the day. This way, it will be easier for your golden retriever to adjust to traveling. If you feed it with a huge amount of food before traveling, it might get sick during the trip. You should reduce the amount of food that it consumes during travel so you can help it gain control over its bladder and itself.

Always see to it that you make frequent rest stops when traveling with your golden retriever. This way, it can have time to relieve itself and avoid accidents. You should also give it time to exercise and walk around every so often. Golden retrievers are capable of holding themselves if they need to, but doing so is not good for them. You should be nice to your dog by stopping every now and then to let it have some time to relax, no matter how far you travel.

Golden Retriever Tips

A lot of people make the mistake of letting their dog ride in a moving vehicle with the dog’s head out of the window. That is not a good idea and you should avoid it at all cost. Letting your dog’s head stick out of the window can result to your golden retriever having an eye, ear, nose, or head injury. Cars and trucks move vary fast; as such, a vehicle can come up unexpectedly and seriously injure your dog.

Never leave your golden retriever alone in the car with the windows up whenever you stop for a break or fill up your car. Even if you open the windows for it, your dog can get a heat stroke, especially during the summer. If you are not careful and unwittingly lock up your dog inside a hot car, it can get a heatstroke easily and die even before you are able to return to the car. If you really need to leave your dog inside the car, make sure that you park under the shade and give your dog plenty of air.

Generally, golden retrievers love to travel, but they need to get used to it first. Your golden retriever will eventually love traveling with you, as long as you do your part and take care of it. Once your dog gets used to traveling with you, it will know when it’s time to travel and be able to tell you when to stop so it can relieve itself. Sooner or later, you’ll both love and enjoy traveling together.
